The priority in Pilates Exercise

What is the priority in Pilates exercise? Is it flexibility? Or musculature strengthening?

  1. The priority is completely individual. Although Joseph Pilates had his foundation exercises, he is reputed to never have taught the same exercises the same way to each individual. He taught to the body in front of him. I give each new client a musculoskeletal assessment to determine if flexilblity, stability or strength is that individuals priority. Although Pilates and Pre Pilates exercises may be the same across the board, the individual client will be coached according to their priority. Take for example leg circles. For a client who is hypermobile, the focus may be on maintaining shoulder and pelvic stability and symmentry in hip rotation. For a client who is less flexible the focus may be on maintaining neutral position while encouraging the hip joint to “open up,” and giving assistance with theraband or light spring. The client who needs strengthening we may had resistance with springs etc. We may have to shorten the lever length for a client where abdominal or lower back strength is weak. I back away from Pilates programs that promise too much, Pilates is like any form of exercise. What you put into it will determine your result. Pilates can increase flexilblity, mobility and muscular strength and the focus changes according to the individual client and whether equipment or props are used.
