As far as I know, the two types of breathing are controlled lateral breathing and short percussive breaths

The type of breathing you use depends on at what level you are working. With beginner participants, using slow controlled lateral ribcage breathing will help with alignment and stability and is a good guide to using your “center”. As you progress to more advanced levels of the Pilates Method, your instructer will challenge your breathing technique by using short percussive breaths ( a la Ron Fletcher ) or getting you inhale fully on exertion or effort and to exhale on the relaxed phase of the exercises (Joes breathing) or use normal breathing but focus pelvic floor and lower abdominal recruitment. I have an article on my website titled “Pilates Principles & Breathing” which explains the type of breathing technique that is suitable for beginner participants.
