Have you ever met Joseph Pilates himself? We all know that Joseph Pilates is the one created the Pilates exercise. So I was wondering, if there is anybody ever met him, perhaps being trained by Joseph Pilates himself? Would be great if you can share your experience. Thanks. 0

There are a handful of elders that trained under Joseph Pilates. A few of them are still teaching today. If you do a search on Pilates elders you will find a lot of info. Two off hand are Fletcher and Romana.

I have not met Joseph Pilates personally, but was extremely fortunate enough to meet and speak to Ron Fletcher, a Pilates elder at the inaugural Aust Pilates Method Association conference in Melbourne 2006. At 84 years young, Ron was a lively and interesting Instructer who had many wonderful stories and memories about Joe, Clara, Martha Graham and the New York days of Joes studio. What I found to be most interesting about Ron’s recollections, is how fondly he spoke of Clara Pilates. He obviously had a great affection and respect for Joes wife and it occurred to me how often she is overlooked in Pilates history, but just how much impact she on it. Clara supported Joe his whole life, and continued to run his New York studio after his death. She told many people that Joe was ahead of his time and that his work would eventually be recognised but it would take about 50 years. I find the whole Pilates history fascinating. Read Joes works “Return To Life Through Contrology” for more insight into this great man and his works.

The “elders” who are still actively teaching other teachers today include Ron Fletcher, Lolita San Miguel, Romana Kryzanowska, Mary Bowen, Ray Grimes and Kathy Grant. You can find articles about Pilates elders and history on Pilates-Pro.com.
