Pilates For Women Guide To Pregnancy Fitness Toning Exercise Education & Information
Offering Pilates Information and Advice To Women Anywhere Across The World
Cystocele ProblemsI was recently diagnosed with a grade 3 cystocele (fallen bladder). I had been doing a pilates mat class but have found some conflicting information about doing that with this type of pelvic floor prolapse. Can anybody offer me some guidence on that? I would hate to give up pilates but I do not want to aggravate this condition. Thanks. 0

You would best be guided by individual instruction rather than a group mat class. It can take up to 2 years to retrain pelvic floor muscles and develop enough strength to help with your problem. The type of exercises for your condition are very, very subtle and take intense concentration to restore sensation and function to the area of concern. Pelvic floor and abdominal exercises for someone like yourself would best be done in a supine postion with the pelvis elevated. (Lie on your back with a pillow or support under your bottom or with your bent legs on a chair.) This enables you to work the pelvic floor area with reduced gravitational load. Avoid abdominal excercises that increase intra abdominal pressure like crunches or sit ups, and focus on Kegel excerises. DO NOT OVER EXERCISE THESE WEAKENED MUSCLES! Weak pelvic floor muscles fatigue very quickly and you may be creating more problems for your self by “overdoing it.” Do yourself a favour and visit Carolyne Anthony’s website at The USA Center for Women’s Fitness. She has great advice for women just like yourself!!
